Please welcome Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Steve Blum to CGC!

Gaming crosses the paths of so many fandoms in the journey of life. Often times an interest we have finds it’s way into another part of our life. For me personally, I remember waking up every Saturday morning to watch Digimon and other cartoons. Wolf’s Rain and Cowboy Bebop were two of the first anime I encountered on my journey to become an Otaku. It’s incredibly fitting that Digimon is one of the most popular Card Games in our store or that I can’t keep any of our Anime title board games in stock.

Understanding the Basics of War Games

War games are a cornerstone of tabletop gaming, combining strategy, foresight, and creativity in a competitive format that has captivated players for centuries. Whether reenacting historical battles on miniature landscapes or engaging in fantastical conflicts in imagined worlds, war games offer an immersive experience that challenges the mind and spirit. To navigate these battles successfully, it is paramount to understand the basics.

The Essence of War Gaming: At its core, war gaming is about strategy. It is a test of your ability to plan, adapt, and make decisive moves under pressure. Whether you are leading armies in Warhammer or positioning your pieces in Chess, the fundamental goal remains the same: outthink your opponent.

Learning the Rules: Familiarizing yourself with the unique set of rules and mechanics of every war game is the first step toward victory. Spend time reading the rulebooks, watching tutorial videos, or seeking advice from experienced players at Central Gaming Corps. Understanding the rules not only helps you play better but also enables you to start thinking about strategies from a more informed perspective.

Strategic Planning: Strategic planning is crucial even before the game starts. This includes choosing your army or pieces, comprehending their strengths and weaknesses, and determining how to best utilize them on the battlefield. Planning also involves anticipating your opponent’s moves and preparing counter-strategies to disrupt their plans.

The Role of Luck: Although strategy is a crucial factor in war games, luck can also have a significant impact on the outcome. Chance elements such as dice rolls and card draws introduce an unpredictable layer to the game. Being able to adapt to these fluctuations is a critical skill that distinguishes seasoned players from novices.

Practice Makes Perfect: Becoming proficient at war gaming requires practice, like any other skill. It is recommended to engage in as many games as possible, experimenting with different strategies, and learning from each outcome. Central Gaming Corps offers the perfect venue to meet fellow gamers, participate in tournaments, and hone your skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

Essential Strategies for Popular War Games

Victory in war games often depends on well-thought-out strategies, a deep understanding of game mechanics, and the ability to predict and counteract your opponent’s moves. In this article, we will explore essential strategies for popular war games available at Central Gaming Corps.

Warhammer Strategies

  • Know Your Army: Each faction in Warhammer possesses its own strengths, weaknesses, and unique abilities. It is important to become familiar with your army’s characteristics and consider how they can be utilized against various opponents.
  • Terrain Matters: Utilize the battlefield to your advantage by strategically positioning your units. Terrain can provide cover, obstruct line of sight, or impede enemy advances. Proper positioning can shift the momentum of the battle in your favor.
  • Adapt and Overcome: No battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy. Be prepared to adjust your strategy based on the evolving dynamics of the game.

Chess Tactics for Beginners

  • Control the Center: Dominating the center of the board gives your pieces greater mobility and control over the game.
  • Develop Your Pieces: In the early stages of the game, prioritize positioning your pieces effectively. Avoid leaving knights, bishops, and rooks idle in the back.
  • King Safety: Always be mindful of your king’s safety. A well-timed castling can safeguard your king and connect your rooks.

Dungeons & Dragons Tactics

  • Know Your Character: Understanding your character’s abilities, strengths, and weaknesses is crucial. This knowledge enables you to make more informed decisions during encounters.
  • Teamwork Is Key: Dungeons and Dragons is a collaborative team game. Work together with your fellow adventurers, combining your unique skills and abilities to overcome challenges.
  • Think Creatively: Sometimes, the most effective solution to a problem is not the most apparent one. Utilize your surroundings, tools, and unique abilities to discover innovative solutions to the obstacles you encounter.

In every game, it is essential to understand the rules, plan ahead, and adapt to new situations. These strategies not only increase your chances of winning but also enhance your appreciation for the complexities and joys of tabletop war gaming.

Advanced War Game Tips

As you advance from a beginner to more advanced levels of play, your strategies must evolve in depth and complexity. Mastering a few advanced tips can significantly enhance your performance in any war game. Central Gaming Corps is committed to helping players of all levels achieve greatness in their gaming endeavors. Here are some sophisticated strategies to consider:

Anticipate Multiple Moves Ahead

  • Think Forward: An advanced player is characterized by their ability to think ahead, anticipating potential outcomes and their opponent’s reactions. This foresight allows for more strategic decision-making and can help outmaneuver the opponent.

Master the Art of Deception

  • Feints and Bluffs: In war games, deception can be a powerful tool, just as it is in war. Feinting, bluffing, and deploying decoys can mislead your opponent about your true intentions, leading them into traps or diverting their attention from your actual strategy.

Control the Pace of the Game

  • Dictate the Flow: Experienced players understand how to manipulate the game’s tempo, either slowing it down or speeding it up to align with their strategy. By controlling the pace, you can unsettle your adversary and compel them to play on your conditions.

Optimize Resource Management

  • Efficient Use of Resources: Effective resource management is crucial in any game, whether it involves troops, cards, or mana. Advanced strategies not only involve using resources wisely but also denying your opponent access to their resources, which limits their options.

Adaptability and Flexibility

  • Be Water: Bruce Lee’s advice to ‘be water’ applies well to war gaming. Adapting your strategy in response to unexpected challenges or opportunities separates great players from good ones.

Psychological Warfare

  • Mind Games: Understanding and influencing your opponent’s mental state can provide a strategic edge. Recognizing patterns in their decision-making and exploiting hesitations or overconfidence can turn the tide in close matches.

Continuous Learning and Analysis

  • Post-Game Reflections: After each game, analyze your performance. Identify what worked, what didn’t, and why. Learning from both wins and losses is crucial for ongoing improvement.

Game-Specific Guides

As you explore the world of tabletop gaming, each game unveils its unique strategic depth. In this article, we offer targeted guidance for excelling in popular games available at Central Gaming Corps.

Improving Chess Strategy in Tabletop Gaming

Chess is a timeless game of strategy that offers endless opportunities for skill enhancement. Advanced players can focus on opening theory to gain early advantages, middle-game tactics to dominate the board, and endgame strategies to clinch victory from seemingly balanced positions. It is important to remember that every piece has value, and understanding pawn structures can dramatically influence the game’s outcome.

How to Win at Warhammer

In Warhammer, understanding your faction’s lore can offer valuable strategic insights. Experienced players should explore the synergies between units to maximize the effectiveness of their army compositions. Terrain manipulation, precise movement, and the psychological aspects of gameplay can also provide a competitive edge. It is important to stay up-to-date with the latest expansions and rule changes to remain ahead.

Pokémon TCG Tips

For enthusiasts of the Pokémon TCG, it is crucial to understand the current meta. Deck building should be flexible enough to adapt to popular trends, with a focus on the synergy between Pokémon abilities, trainer cards, and energy management. As you progress, timing and predicting your opponent’s moves become more critical, making practice and continuous learning essential components of success.

Top Picks for Party Games: Fun for Everyone

There’s something truly magical about gathering friends and family for a game night. Whether it’s to celebrate a special occasion or simply to enjoy each other’s company, the right party games can turn any gathering into an unforgettable experience. At Central Gaming Corps, we understand the power of a well-chosen game to bring people together and create lasting memories. In this article, we’ll guide you through some top picks for party games that promise fun for everyone, regardless of age or gaming experience.

Understanding Your Audience: Picking the Right Party Games

When it comes to selecting the perfect party games, understanding your audience is key. Are you hosting a family gathering with a mix of ages, or is it an adults-only evening? The games that will keep a group of teens engaged might differ significantly from those that a group of adults would find amusing. For families, games that are easy to learn and play are often a hit, allowing even the youngest members to join in. On the other hand, adults might appreciate games that challenge their strategic thinking or involve a bit more complexity. No matter who your guests are, the goal is to choose games that will be inclusive and enjoyable for everyone involved.

At Central Gaming Corps, we cater to a wide range of preferences and can help you find games that will suit the specific needs of your party. From lively, interactive games that get everyone up and moving to more strategic games that require a bit of thought, our collection has something for everyone.

Family Party Games Ideas

For those family gatherings where you have a mix of ages, choosing the right games can be a delightful challenge. The key is to find games that are simple enough for the younger ones but still engaging for the adults. Here are some top picks from Central Gaming Corps that promise fun for the whole family:

  1. Charades: An all-time classic, Charades is perfect for all ages. Players take turns acting out a word or phrase without speaking, while others guess. It’s a great way to get everyone up and moving.
  2. Pictionary: Unleash the inner artists in your family with Pictionary. This game of drawing and guessing is not only fun but can lead to some hilarious interpretations of the sketches.
  3. The Game of Life: Navigate through the twists and turns of life in this classic board game. It’s a fun way for kids and adults alike to make choices and see their outcomes.
  4. Uno: This card game is easy to learn and can be played by a wide range of ages. It’s perfect for a quick game that’s full of surprises.
  5. Scrabble Junior: A simplified version of the classic Scrabble, this game is great for helping younger children with word formation and spelling, while still being entertaining for adults.

Remember, the goal is to choose games that encourage interaction and laughter, creating those precious family memories.

Team Party Games

Team-based party games have a unique charm, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition. These games are ideal for groups who enjoy collaboration and teamwork. Central Gaming Corps recommends the following team party games that are sure to be a hit at your next gathering:

  1. Taboo: This game challenges teams to guess words or phrases based on their teammate’s descriptions. However, the describer must avoid using certain ‘taboo’ words, making for some creative and often humorous explanations.
  2. Cranium: A game that combines various activities like sketching, sculpting, acting, and word puzzles. Teams compete to complete these tasks, testing a range of skills from their members.
  3. Pictionary Relay: A twist on the classic Pictionary, this version has teams racing against each other to guess drawings. It’s a fast-paced and exciting way to get everyone involved.
  4. Trivial Pursuit Team Edition: This game takes the classic trivia challenge and turns it into a team activity, allowing groups to pool their knowledge across various categories.

These team party games are not just about winning; they’re about building connections and enjoying the spirit of playfulness with friends and family.

Large Party Games for Bigger Groups

Organizing games for large groups can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you see everyone involved and having fun. Central Gaming Corps has some excellent recommendations for games that are particularly well-suited for larger parties:

  1. Werewolf: A game of deception and deduction, Werewolf is perfect for large groups. Players are assigned roles as either villagers or werewolves, and the villagers must figure out who among them are the werewolves before it’s too late.
  2. Two Truths and a Lie: This is a fantastic icebreaker where each player states two truths and one lie about themselves. The rest of the group has to guess which statement is the lie, leading to surprising revelations and lots of laughs.
  3. Telephone Charades (aka Charades Down the Line): A mix of charades and the classic game of telephone. Players form a line, and the first person acts out a word to the next person, who then acts it out for the next, and so on. The last person guesses what the original word was, often leading to hilarious outcomes.
  4. Scavenger Hunt: Always a hit, scavenger hunts can be tailored for any group size and location. Divide into teams and set them off on a quest to find items or complete challenges.

  4. Secret Hitler: A dramatic game of political intrigue and betrayal set in 1930s Germany. Players are secretly divided into two teams – liberals and fascists – with fascists trying to install their cold-blooded leader while liberals work to stop them.
  5. Catan: For those who enjoy strategy, Catan is a game of resource gathering and trading, where players aim to build the biggest and best settlements on the island of Catan.

These games are excellent choices for adult party-goers looking for something beyond the traditional board games, offering a blend of humor, strategy, and sometimes, a little bit of controversy.

Innovative Party Game Ideas

Sometimes, the best party games are those that you invent on the spot or add your own twist to existing games. Here are some innovative ideas to spice up your next party:

  1. DIY Escape Room: Create a mini escape room experience in your home. Use puzzles, clues, and locks that lead to a final prize. It’s a great way to encourage teamwork and problem-solving.
  2. Customized Trivia: Design a trivia game based on the interests of your guests. Whether it’s pop culture, history, or even personal trivia about the group, it’s a fun and engaging way to test everyone’s knowledge.
  3. Movie Night Game: Watch a movie and add a gaming element to it. For example, assign each person a word or action. Whenever that word is said or the action occurs in the movie, they have to perform a fun task.
  4. Story Building: Start a story with a sentence and have each person add to it. This can lead to some hilarious and unexpected storylines.
  5. DIY Board Game Night: Have guests create their own board games before the party or in teams during the party. It’s a creative exercise that can result in some surprisingly fun and unique games.

These ideas not only add an element of fun but also allow for a more personalized and memorable party experience.

7 Games That Your Family Will be Thankful For This Holiday Season

That time of year is once again upon us! The time when families gather to see each other. This year, Central Gaming Corps wants to help make your family gathering a little more fun! I want to walk you through a few games that you can play with every member of your family.

King of Tokyo

King of Tokyo is a 2 to 6-player competitive game for ages 8+ that takes about 30 minutes to play.

In King of Tokyo, you play as a giant monster around the city of Tokyo. You try to get into Tokyo and score points while beating up other monsters. Through all of this, you are competing with other monsters to see who will be crowned king of Tokyo!

King of Tokyo – iello
King of Tokyo – iello

On your turn, you roll six dice that you are allowed roll up to three times each. On these custom dice, you can attack, refill life, gain energy, and/or get victory points. When you roll an attack, you can attack the monster in Tokyo. If you are in Tokyo you can attack everyone else. Roll any number of life and you can gain that much life, unless you are in Tokyo. With energy, you can buy power-ups to help propel you to victory.

King of Tokyo is a fun game that can be enjoyed by the entire family. With Cartoony graphics and an easy to learn system, kids will enjoy learning some of the basics of board gaming. Adults will find that with different results every time, the replayability is monstrous.

Tokyo Highway

Tokyo Highway is a 2 to 4-player competitive game for ages 8+ that takes a little more than 30 minutes to play.

In Tokyo Highway, you are building a metropolitan expressway around obstacles and other players’ highways. Following simples steps, players are racing to be the first to place all 10 of their cars on their highway without knocking the entire expressway down!

Tokyo Highway – itten
Tokyo Highway – itten

During your turn, you are placing the pillar blocks to continue your highway. You earn a car on that stretch of highway for each other players’ highway you cross over and under. Cross three stretches, get three cars. You will have to find a balance when building your highway. Run out of pillar blocks and you’re out of the game. Play continues until one player places all of their cars and wins!

This is a game that a family can sit down and play over and over again. It doesn’t require any reading or writing, just a basic concept of the rules. This makes it an easy game for kids to learn and play. Meanwhile, adults will have fun trying to outsmart each other in a different way every game.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Choose Your Own Adventure games are 1 or more-player cooperative games for ages 10+ that takes at least an hour to play, but can be broken up into multiple play sessions.

There are multiple version of Choose Your Own Adventure. In House of Danger, you are a detective with a sixth sense sent to investigate criminal activity and dark history in your town, centered around the missing owner of the Marsden Mansion. Explore the house, gather clues, and conquer challenges on your way to victory!

House of Danger – Z-Man Games
War With the Evil Power Master – Z-Man Games

In War With the Evil Power Master, up to 8 people play the leader of the Rapid Force Crew. You travel around galaxy that has seen centuries of peace and stop the Evil Power Master from enacting his sinister plan!

Those that have read Choose Your Own Adventure books will be familiar with the mechanics of this game, however, instead of using a book, you now use numbered cards to dictate the outcomes of your actions. War With the Evil Power Master also introduces a race mechanic. Can you stop the Evil Power Master before it’s too late?

I used to love the Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was a kid. Something about having control of the story was so satisfying to me. Kids will quickly latch onto the idea of being able to tell the story in their own way and adults will be able to come back to this game multiple times to see what different paths you can take to your final outcome.

Project L

Project L is a 2 to 4-player competitive game for ages 8+ that takes about 30 minutes to play.

Project L is a tile-matching game that I can only compare to Tetris, but it’s not quite Tetris. In Project L you are competing for the most points by filling in shapes to complete puzzles. It’s a fun and addicting game that feels like it goes by too quick.

Project L – Boardcubator
Project L – Boardcubator

When playing Project L, you take three actions per turn. That is picking a puzzle card, placing a piece, or taking a master action to place a piece on each of your puzzles. Each completed puzzle earns you points and/or a new piece to use on the next puzzle. You start the game with two simple pieces, but you quickly grow and develop an efficient way to quickly complete puzzles.

Project L is easy to pick up for anyone, making it enticing for kids and adult alike. It’s an addicting game with limitless replayability.

Tacocat Spelled Backwards

Tacocat Spelled Backwards is a 2-player competitive game for ages 7+ that plays in about 15 minutes.

Tacocat Spelled Backwards – Exploding Kittens

Tacocat Spelled Backwards is a tug-of-war style game powered by palindromes! Very similar to the classic card game, War, players will play competing cards. Play the card with the higher or matching value to protect your hand or sacrifice your lowest number. Once you’re down to your last card, the lowest card wins the round and moves the marker closer to your victory.

Tacocat Spelled Backwards – Exploding Kittens

With some luck, strategy, and instinct, you can beat your opponent. Kids will enjoy this game because they can easily grasp the concept. Parents will love the compact design that allows them to take, and play, this game anywhere!

Dungeon Scrawlers

Dungeon Scrawlers is a 2 to 4-player competitive game for ages 10+ that takes about 15 minutes to play.

In Dungeon Scrawlers, you are an adventurer racing through dungeons created by the Mad Mage, collecting treasure, fighting monsters, casting spells, and connecting artifact fragments.

Dungeon Scrawlers – WizKids
Dungeon Scrawlers – WizKids

Players use markers to draw their way through one of ten mazes, collecting points along the way, To begin the game, each player picks one of the five available characters. Each character has a unique ability to help gather certain points. For example, the Barbarian only needs to fill in the head to kill a monster. The rogue only needs to touch a treasure chest to gain all of its treasure. The round ends when one of the players defeats the dungeon’s boss. The player with the most points at the end of three rounds wins the game!

Kids love to play with markers. Now, we’re talking about 10+, so that might not be much of a factor, but the nature of the game being a race with markers seems fun, even to me. The adult crowd might find this game a little childish at first, but after playing, I think that this game will bring out the competitive nature in everyone.

Kids’ Chronicles: Quest for the Moon Stones

Quest for the Moon Stones is a 1 to 4-player cooperative game for ages 7+ that takes between 30 and 45 minutes to play.

In Quest for the Moon Stones, you play a magicians’ apprentice, diving into the fairy tale lands of the Kingdom of Summer and the Winter Empire. Along with your Cat familiar, you embark on a quest to find the Moon Stones. Magicians have to solve mysteries and assist citizens of both Kingdoms overcome their problems.

Kids’ Chronicles: Quest for the Moon Stones – Lucky Duck Games
Kids’ Chronicles: Quest for the Moon Stones – Lucky Duck Games

This game is a mix of a board game and companion app. As you can see, the board has several QR codes. With the app, you scan each QR code and watch the world come alive in front of you. You will go from location to location, gather items, and complete quests to help the people of the two Kingdoms.

This is a brand new game developed with testing and feedback from children. Parents can be confident that their young children will enjoy this interactive game, and while the parents may not enjoy this game themselves, the time spent their children will be exciting and rewarding all on its own.

Make sure you check out all of these games. You can find them all here, at Central Gaming Corps, and at shop.centralgamingcorps.com. Game on!

What to Look For in Digimon CG’s Newest Set!

This weekend sees the prerelease for the long awaited Double Diamond, Digimon Card Game’s newest set. After being delayed multiple times, players were growing anxious for the set. This set is going to once again change some of the things we see in competitive play.

So, I’ve been playing this game since its initial release in November of 2020. In that time, we’ve seen the meta game change with pretty much every set. The only thing that has remained a constant has been Rookie Rush and Security Control. Those two play styles are probably not going anywhere in Double Diamond, however, we’re getting some cool new mechanics that I believe will make it into competition.

New Mechanics

Double Diamond will be bringing back a handful of mechanics that we’ve grown used to; Rush, Retaliation, Security Attack +1, and some decent draw power. We are also getting some mechanics that we haven’t seen before, like Delay, Decoy, and of course the Bonds, which is the featured mechanic of the set. With these, and some answers to Rookie Rush, this set seems to be promising to shake up the meta a little bit. Let’s take a look at these mechanics.

Double Diamond – Digimon Card Game
Howling Memory Boost! – Digimon Card Game

Delay

Trash this card in your battle area to activate the effect below. You can’t activate this effect the turn this card enters play.

Delay is a new mechanic coming with this set. Delay appears like it will just be a mechanic attached to Option cards. Cards with Delay stay on the field even after their initial use. Then on a subsequent turn, you activate a second ability by trashing the the card from the field. Our example here is Howling Memory Boost! (BT6-097)

Howling Memory Boost! is already a pretty decent card with its primary effect. It does want most blue decks want to do, which is trash digivolution cards and profit from it. It also has a Delay effect that says Gain 2 memory. It’s overall a pretty good deal for 3 memory. There is a Delay card in blue, yellow, and purple. Look out for Security Control in your next tournament.

There are two things worth noting. One, the security effect does not activate the primary effect. It instead places the card on the field for you to use the Delay effect. Two, since I features Howling Memory Boost!, it would be wrong of me not to mention that the card already has an errata, as the Japanese version does not have the words, up to, in the first sentence.

Decoy

When one of your other black Digimon would be deleted by an opponent’s effect, you may delete this Digimon to prevent that deletion.

If I may, Black is finally getting some support in this set. I know that Black has never been bad, but I have a Black reboot deck, and while it’s not competitive, I would love to alter it and make it better. However, it’s always felt like Bandai threw us Reboot and Blocker, and said that’s good enough. Yes, I realize that we have Diaboromon, but that’s not inherently a “Black deck”.

Machmon – Digimon Card Game

With Decoy, your blockers gain more survivability, as you can block and then sacrifice decoys in lieu of sacrificing the blocker itself. It is also a great way to counter retaliation and protect your big lv.6 and lv.7 beaters. With Decoy, Black comes back into the world of competitive play stronger than ever.

Agumon – Bond of Bravery – Digimon Card Game

Bonds

Alright, I was already thinking of putting together an Agumon deck (he’s my favorite Digimon), but this completely sold me on it. This set features the Bond of Bravery and the Bond of Friendship. Both require you to have at least 7 memory and play the new Tai Kamiya or Matt Ishida cards.

Let’s go over each instance. Tai Kamiya (BT6-087) says to digivolve one of your Agumon into Agumon – Bond of Bravery (BT6-018). That’s a lv.3 into a lv.7! This is a risky move because you will also have to trash the top 2 cards of your security and trash the Agumon – Bond of Bravery at the end of turn if you still have 1 or more security cards.

It’s a high risk, high reward deal, because this new improved Agumon, assuming it can attack, can delete a big Digimon and trash potentially AT LEAST the top 2 cards of your opponents security. If you manage to digivolve it on top of the new Agumon (BT6-007, you’re adding Security Attack +1. If you time it right and pull it off, it could very well win you the game.

The one downside is that it also takes up some space in your deck because you’ll probably want to run 3 or 4 of the Tai Kamiya cards, at least 2 Agumon – Bond of Bravery, and 4 of the Agumon from the set.

Gabumon – Bond of Friendship is played virtually the exact same way, just with a Matt Ishida (BT6-088) and a Gabumon. You are still trashing the top 2 of your own security stack and deleting Gabumon – Bond of Friendship at the end of turn if you have 1 or more security cards.

So what’s the upside for this combo? Well, it unsuspends itself. As long as you digivolved it with Matt Ishida, you’re guaranteed to activate the first [When Attacking] effect. Then, if you used the new Gabumon (BT6-019), you’re unsuspending it again. So you have the potential to be attacking three times in a row, each time activating the second [When Attacking] effect, potentially wiping your opponents board.

Gabumon – Bond of Friendship – Digimon Card Game

There is definitely an argument to be had about which one is the better card. We’ll just have to wait and see which one performs better. I, for one, intend to build a deck for both of these combos.

Let’s take a look at one more card.

Gewalt Schwärmer – Digimon Card Game

Board Wipe?

I was saying earlier that Black is finally getting some support. This is more proof. Gewalt Schwärmer (BT6-105) will likely be an auto-add to any Black deck that is entering a tournament. Why is that? Well, if you aren’t well versed in the competitive scene of the Digimon Card Game, Rookie Rush is a deck type that has dominated the meta since this game’s release. It frustrates a lot of players. Gewalt Schwärmer feels like a good answer to the issue for Black players. It’s an expensive cost, but worth it if you’re staring down the barrel of 5 or 6 Rookie Digimon on your opponents board.

This month, we are being graced by a new set in the Digimon Card Game. We’ve waited for some time for it, but this set looks like it will be worth the long wait. We look forward to seeing some of the competitive edge that these new cards will bring in the future.

Make sure you’re here at Central Gaming Corps for the Double Diamond prerelease at 4:30pm on Saturday, November 20th, 2021. And always remember to Game On!

What does Fusion Strike Bring to the Pokémon TCG Meta?

It’s that time of year again. November is TCG release season. This November, we are getting a new Magic: the Gathering set (Innistrad: Crimson Vow), Digimon set (Double Diamond), and of course, a new Pokémon set (Fusion Strike). We already got a new Yu-Gi-Oh set (Burst of Destiny). A couple weeks ago, we talked about what we were excited for in Crimson Vow.

Today, we’re talking about Fusion Strike, the newest set coming to Pokémon TCG this week! Fusion Strike brings 20 new Pokémon V, 8 new Pokémon VMAX, and a new keyword, fusion strike!

Fusion Strike Pokémon

Similar to Single Strike and Rapid Strike, Fusion Strike is a keyword in the top-right corner of multiple cards in this set. Fusion Strike brings an interesting new mechanic to standard where having multiple pokémon with the keyword on the field creates a benefit. For example, Toxtricity has a new ability, Maximum Downer, wherein if all of your Pokémon in play are Fusion Strike Pokémon, your opponents Pokémon VMAX take a -30 to their HP. This particular effect isn’t gamebreaking, but it’s an excellent example of the kind of thing that this mechanic brings to the table.

Toxtricity – Pokémon Trading Card Game

There are a few Fusion Strike cards that I would like to go over really fast.

Genesect V – Pokémon Trading Card Game

Genesect V

I really like Genesect V. Pokémon TCG has a ton of draw power, so some may say that this card isn’t totally necessary, but if you’re building a deck around the Fusion Strike Mechanic, I think that this card is an instant add. The ability to draw cards isn’t a big deal, but potentially drawing up to six card per turn is an uncommon feat. You’ll find that there is a lot of synergy between Fusion Strike cards.

Latios & Latias

Latios and Latias, again, aren’t gamebreaking cards, but they’re fun cards in a casual format, and they aren’t terrible cards to throw into a Fusion Strike deck. Latios has the ability, Blue Assist, which allows you to attach psychic energy for free to a Latias. Latias has a similar ability to attach an energy to Latios. This let’s you set up Latias, who is arguably the better of the two, to potentially start attacking on turn two while also shutting down your opponents Pokémon VMAX. So far, it’s looking like Psychic might be the powerhouse of this set.

Latios – Pokémon Trading Card Game
Mew VMAX – Pokémon Trading Card Game

Mew VMAX

I want you to picture this scenario. You have a Latios and Latias, there may also be a Genesect V and Accelgor on your bench. You have some energy in hand. Mew VMAX is your active Pokémon. Here’s why this card is good. We don’t really care about Max Miracle. 130 damage on a VMAX Pokémon is rather underwhelming. Instead, what we’re looking at is Cross Fusion Strike. You now have access to every single move on your bench. That’s insane. You can use Latias’ Dyna Barrier and have immunity to damage from your opponents Pokémon VMAX.

This almost forces your opponent to play around it with normal Pokémon or Pokémon V. At that point, you can use Max Miracle to just bully them for the 130 damage per turn.

Fusion Strike Support

These are just some of the Pokémon that I’m excited to see, but you can’t win a game with just the Pokémon alone. So let’s look at some of the support for Fusion Strike that is coming with them.

Elesa’s Sparkle

Elesa’s Sparkle is a great way to power up our new Fusion Strike Pokémon. This awesome card let’s you attach two Fusion Strike energy cards from your deck to two different Fusion Strike Pokémon. That’s excellent, considering that Fusion Strike energy is a wildcard energy. With four of Elesa’s Sparkles’ in your Fusion Strike deck, you shouldn’t ever be too hurt for energy.

Elesa’s Sparkle – Pokémon Trading Card Game
Chili & Cilan & Cress

Chili & Cilan & Cress

So you’ve got your Mew V out but you’re stalling on that Mew VMAX? Don’t worry! Chili & Cilan & Cress are here to help! This card is basically like drawing a Mew VMAX, as it allows you to search your deck for three Fusion Strike Pokémon and put them in your hand. That means up to three Mew VMAX’s going straight into your hand. You’re just as likely to go out and find the attack that you want the Mew VMAX to use and put it on the bench. That’s good synergy.

Fusion Strike Energy

No one that is reading this is a stranger to what I like to call wildcard energy. Fusion Strike is no different, save that it only attaches to Fusion Strike Pokémon and prevents all Pokémon abilities aimed at the Pokémon this is attached to. This combined with Elesa’s Sparkle create a great combo and some awesome synergy! Make sure to include both in a Fusion Strike deck.

Fusion Strike Energy – Pokémon Trading Card Game

So, needless to say, I’m excited to jump into this set and throw together a themed deck. What are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments or over on Facebook and Discord!

Check out Fusion Strike at Central Gaming Corps on Friday, November 12th and don’t forget to Game On!

Meet the Neat Little Addition to Our Board Game Lineup: Tentacle Town!

We were spitballing ideas around about what to blog about this week. Then a box wheeled into our store containing our newest board game. Meet Tentacle Town from Monster Fight Club! If you missed your chance to nab this game on Kickstarter earlier this year, we’ve got some great news. You can get your copy right here at Central Gaming Corps!

Tentacle Town

Welcome to Tentacle Town! In this game you are playing the part of an adventurer that is starting a new town by the water. Watch out though, these waters are infested with tentacles! It is your job to recruit citizens, construct buildings, and hunt the tentacles on your way to becoming the most famous person, and new mayor, of Tentacle Town!

Tentacle Town – Monster Fight Club

Each player takes turns recruiting new citizens and tasking them with building up the town. Meanwhile, you’ll need to defend the town from giant tentacles in the water that threaten to ruin all of your progress. The more buildings you you have in a district, the more profitable the tasks in that district will be for you.

Tentacle Town – Monster Fight Club

In Tentacle Town, there are three different districts. In the Foundry, you create harpoons to hunt the tentacles. On the Docks, you butcher the tentacles that you hunted. In the market, you guessed it, you sell the butchered tentacles. The money from the sales can be put into multiple things. This loop creates a nice economy for you to manage.

When there are more citizens in a district, everyone at the table benefits from them! However, if you have more buildings in a district than your fellow players, you will benefit more than everyone else! If you find the right balance, you’re sure to come out on top.

At the end of each turn, the player rolls the danger die included in the box. This determines if the tentacles attack, stay calm, or if more of them pop out of the water. The more citizens there are in a district, the more likely the tentacles are to attack! Be careful, when the tentacles attack, they’ll either destroy buildings, kill citizens, or scare citizens away to run to a safer district.

Tentacle Town – Monster Fight Club

When the tentacles attack, it’s your time to shine, assuming you have a spare harpoon handy. Killing a tentacle nets you some major gains. Kill a tentacle and you earn some fame, getting you closer to being mayor, and you get some fresh calamari to butcher at the docks!

This game is for ages 6 and up, introducing young and new board gamers to some core mechanics like worker placement, area control, and resource management. Meanwhile, there’s enough strategy for veteran board gamers to come back to this game time and time again.

Be sure to pick up your copy of Tentacle Town at Central Gaming Corps or at shop.centralgamingcorps.com!
